Title: Mastering the Art of Multitasking Description: Multitasking, as a human endeavor, is a term borrowed from the world of high-speed computers. But for all of the benefits it offers, multitasking comes with a price - both in the realm of computers as well as human endeavors. Yet, despite the misuses and abuses of multitasking, the fact remains that multitasking is here to stay. Time management has its place, but effective multitasking requires a collaborative effort on the part of the individual contributor and the manager, with the manager assuming a proactive role in facilitating “task management” rather than simply demanding that individuals better manage their time.
In this timely presentation Dr. Lon Roberts will share insights from recent research on multitasking along with suggestions on how to get the most out of multitasking as a management strategy. It is not a diatribe against multitasking, but rather a synopsis of how to multitask more effectively as the pressures mount to “do more with less.” The topics that will be covered in this presentation include:
- Recognizing your multitasking capacity and limits
- Multitasking - what it is, what it isn't, and why the distinction matters
- Contemporary research on multitasking
- How multitasking management differs from time management
- What your Task Orientation Style has to do with multitasking effectiveness
- The project manager's role in facilitating multitasking
- How to foster “attention management” in an ADD work environment
- Minimizing the overhead associated with multitasking
- Useful tools to assist in managing multiple tasks
